Homalco Wildlife & Cultural Tours seeks a Qualified & Experienced Marine Naturalist as our lead whale watching guide responsible for marine tour development and guide training. The successful candidate will develop industry-leading marine tours that encompass cetaceans, pinnipeds, birds, plus other local flora and fauna around the Discovery Islands while incorporating local Indigenous content. As trainer, the Lead Naturalist will share their extensive knowledge to educate junior guides on best-in-class tour practices with a focus on safety and sustainable whale watching. The individual will also lead guests on whale watching, grizzly bear viewing and other marine adventures from Campbell River.

Our team is looking for a highly skilled, passionate, and qualified individual to help raise the bar for Indigenous tourism as an ambassador for Homalco Tours and Homalco First Nation. You are driven by your commitment to the environment and desire to share knowledge.

Responsibilities include:

·        In depth knowledge of BC’s natural history/environment, the species that exist and the threats they face

·        Educate guests on wildlife, natural history, general ecology, marine mammals

·        Lead marine team to success through on-going training and education

·        Perform duties dictated by Skipper as 2nd Mate to ensure safety of guests

·        Follow all current COVID-19 guidelines

·        Reporting and record keeping

·        Uphold agreed upon Codes of Conduct and Operations Procedures

·        Cleaning and maintenance duties including pre- and post-cleaning of vessels

·        Other duties as required

Required skills and certifications:

·        Post-secondary degree in Marine Biology, Ecology or equivalent

·        Basic Marine First Aid

·        Valid Driver’s License

·        SVOP and ROC-M certificates a plus

Homalco Wildlife & Cultural Tours seeks Skilled & Experienced Skippers to safely transport guests on whale watching, grizzly bear and cultural adventures around Campbell River and to Orford Bay in Bute Inlet, BC. Our team is looking for passionate people who can deliver the ultimate marine experience for our guests, while maintaining professionalism and always putting safety first. Skippers are expected to have a high level of understanding when it comes to marine wildlife and the natural environment.

Successful candidates will enthusiastically deliver a world-class experience as an ambassador of the Homalco First Nation and their traditional lands, while striving to raise the standard of Indigenous tourism. You will work as a team with a cultural whale watching guide to provide local knowledge of historical geographic locations and history/facts of marine wildlife. You will be familiar with the local shoreline, its hazards, and will know how to safely operate a vessel in variable weather and sea conditions.

DUTIES & RESPONSABILITIES:

The primary objectives are to provide guests with safe wildlife viewing and share Homalco culture/history while delivering a legendary guest experience.

MINIMUM Required skills and certifications (TRAINING AVAILABLE):

  • Local marine knowledge of the area and experience navigating the waters
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP)
  • Small Domestic Vessel – Basic Safety (SDV-BS) (formerly MED A3)
  • Radio Operators Certificate Marine (ROC-M)
  • Basic Marine First Aid
  • Commercial Bear Viewing Level 1 (CBVA)
  • Driver’s License – Class 4 an asset
